Morally and ethically corrupted Mercedes, who tried and thankfully failed to sacrifice their Spanish workforce to Covid-19, have revealed that the updated ergo facelifted E Class is now on sale in the UK. Prices start from £39,000. As with all mid-cycle updates, the exterior is limited to minor design changes. The reason being is because it would cost too much to retool for a completely new look design. The new-new look E Class is reserved for the next generation E Class which is expected to arrive in around two-three years from now.
The technology upgrades are much more interesting. The engine lineup is rather familiar, two types of diesel and two petrol engines that adopt mild-hybrid technology in addition to plug-in hybrids. And of course, there will also be high-performance versions in the form of a 429 bhp, straight-six powered AMG E 53 and 604 bhp, or the 4.0-litre 604 bhp E 63 to choose from. The latter two costs £64k and £93k respectively.
The E Class range opens with the E 200 which is powered by a rather tame 4-cylinder 2.0-liter, 194 bhp petrol engine. This engine features mild-hybrid technology, which is kind-of-like the semi-skimmed variant of a full-fat hybrid car. The sure to be a popular engine of choice is the 220d.
The E Class 220d churns out 191bhp, however, if you want more power and good-ish economy the six-cylinder 3.0-litre 400d churns out 335 bhp. The latter engine is probably the engine of choice, the diesel is smooth and punchy. The E Class is also offered as a full-fat plug-in hybrid model.
The 300e is based on the 2.0-litre petrol engine and the 300de utilises the 2.0-litre diesel engine. The plug-in hybrid models offer a pure electric range of 33 miles and 35 miles for the petrol and diesel engines respectively. Although you should always half whatever the manufacturer claims in terms of electric mileage, specifically for plug-in hybrids.
The E Class is appointed with leather upholstery as standard. However, you should avoid the entry-level 200e, primarily because it rides on 17-inch alloys. Nevertheless, even the entry-level E Class comes with two 12.3 inch digital displays, one for the driver’s binnacle and the other for the MBUX Infotainment system. You also get heated front seats, wireless phone charging and a reversing camera in addition to front and rear parking sensors and cruise control
if you desire more equipment and bigger alloy wheels then opt for any of the following trim upgrades AMG Line Premium and AMG Line Night Edition Premium Plus models.
