The Ferrari 488 That Thinks Its A LaFerrari But Is Actually A Plugin Hybrid Hypercar, The SF90 Stradale
Auto News

I can not think of any plugin hybrid electric supercars but I can now because Ferrari has just revealed the SF90 Stradale. But it isn’t a mere supercar for it is a plugin hybrid hypercar, the most powerful Ferrari ever road car to date. The SF90 Stradale is more Powerful even than the £1m LaFerrari hybrid hypercar. The twin-turbo found in the 488 GTB has been heavily revised. Throw in two electric motors mounted on the front axle and one more mounted at the rear (housed between the gearbox and engine) and you have a potent AWD force more powerful than a Tsunami. The SF90 marks the 90th anniversary of the foundation of Scuderia Ferrari.

The total system power is 986bhp and 900Nm of torque at maximum boost. Naturally, this unnatural force allows for a 0-62mph time of just 2.5 seconds, 124mph in 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 212mph. The SF90 can reach 84mph in pure electric mode but is limited to just 15miles before the 7.9kWh batteries run out and require recharging. And the engine will recharge the batteries as you drive.

As with all modern day cars, the SF90 Stradale comes loaded with a number of driving modes. Hybrid mode is the standard setting. The eDrive setting is for pure electric driving. The default mode for potential/future owners will be the Qualify mode. Qualify gives you unrestricted access to that 986bhp total system power.

This new technology and ultra-high-performance have required collaboration between different disciplines. Engineering, software, aerodynamic and electric powertrain departments have combined to detail and extract as much raw performance as possible.

But as with all such vehicles that encompass twin technologies there is a penalty to pay. Weight. The SF90 Stradale weighs in at 1,570kg. That’s 15kg less than the benchmark LaFerrari. This is despite using a combination of carbon fibre and aluminium, the latter used more for improving torsional rigidity.

The SF90 incorporates an F1 style drag reduction rear wing with an additional gurney flap that raises or lowers into the body when required. Or not as the case may be. Ferrari says the SF90 Stradale can generate 390kg of downforce at 155mph.

The interior cabin features a 16-inch fully digital instrument binnacle. Most of the car’s functions have moved from the center console to the steering wheel which appears to be as complex as its modern F1 counterpart. It’s more like a touchscreen with haptic feedback that allows the driver to control virtually every aspect of the car using just their thumbs.

So how much for this metal, carbon fibre and electricity? £400,000 GBP is the current ballpark figure. The Ferrari SF90 Stradale will not become a limited edition model, it will be a series production until the 488 lineage is superseded. In many ways, it is a look into the future of the supercar.
