Former F1 driver, Mark Webber, was involved in a massive race shunt during the last race of the season while competing in the World Endurance Championship being held in Brazil over the weekend.
Webber, in his first full season in the sport since quitting Formula One after 12 years, was racing his Porsche Hybrid 919 in the Six Hours of Sao Paulo.
As Webber exited the penultimate corner and entered the high speed curve which leads onto the main straight he collided with the Ferrari driven by Italy’s Matteo Cressoni.

Its not clear what went wrong but it seems the class leading Porsche was involved in some kind of high speed misunderstanding and the result was a powerful impact between the competitors that resulted in the race ending under safety car conditions.
Both Webber and Matteo were taken to the local Hospital, Webber was seen giving the thumbs up as he was extricated from his stricken Porsche and stretchered off to an awaiting ambulance.
A statement from the FIA Medical Delegate read.
“A dramatic accident occurred during the 6 Hours of Sao Paulo between the No.20 Porsche 919 Hybrid of Mark Webber and the No.90 8Star Motorsports Ferrari 458 Italia of Matteo Cressoni. The two drivers were conscious and transported with medical assistance to the circuit’s Medical Centre. Examinations took place.
“The two drivers were then taken to the Hospital Bandeirantes in Sao Paulo for additional checks. They are in a condition which is for the moment satisfactory.”
Webber is no stranger to massive race accidents he crashed at the same spot on the Brazilian circuit in 2003 during a wet F1 race in what was probably an even bigger crash.

Fortunately Webber suffered no injuries.
